低い山地の林の中に生える。花のころに葉が枯れていることが多く、「葉がない」→「歯がない」の語呂合わせで、可哀想な名がついた。しかし春、光沢のある葉は目立ち、ユリ科なのに網状の葉脈を持つ特異な存在。高さ60～100cmの茎の上に横向きの花をつける。花期7～8月。
