Places and times seen in Munakata city
It is a winterbird and it can be seen from October to March.
A small number fly to Munakata, and the opportunity to see is poor. It does not become a large herd in the wintering season, it is often mixed with other ducks and can be found by careful observation. You may see it in dam lake, fishing river basin, reservoir pond and others.
Characteristic
Total length 50 cm.
Male has brown head and neck, body gets gray. The back is gray and the shoulder feathers are brown. The chest gray and dark brown scales are fine striped aside. Waist, upper and lower tail tubes are black, tails are gray brown. The beak is black. The blades are dark reddish brown, the heavy rain cover is black, the next wind cut is white.
Females resemble females of mallards, but their beaks are orange and yellow, and the upper beaks have black parts. There is a pale black-brown overexposure line, there is no red-brown portion like a male on the wing.
Both sexes are orange-yellow in feet.
Habit
It lives in rivers, ponds, paddy fields, lakes, tidal flats and the like. The wintering season does not become a large flock. Eat seeds of floating plants with beaks on the surface of the water, eat seeds that everyone stuck on hands and standing on the bottom.
distribution
It is a winterbird and inhabits almost the whole country. A small number breed in Hokkaido.
It lives widely in the northern hemisphere. Breeding areas are tundra areas such as Siberia and northern Canada.
