Places and times seen in Munakata city

Winterbird. In Munakata you can see from around October until around March. It is often seen in the vicinity of the river mouth of the river and at the dam lake.

Characteristic

Total length 48 cm.
The male has a head like a Napoleonic hat, from the eyes to the rear head is green luster and the others are red purple. There is vitiligo in the forehead. The throat and upper jaw are pale yellow with a black neck ring. The body is gray as a whole, and the black and white scale pattern of the chest becomes finer as going aside. Long three row wind cuts are black and have a cream colored feather edge and flowing like covering the tail feather from the waist. The tail tube is black and there are yellow triangular spots on both sides.
Females are brown in color and faces from upper to lower gray.
The beak is black in both males and females. The wing mirror is green and the top and bottom are sandwiched between white lines.

Habit

It lives in rivers, ponds, lakes and inland bays. Often the flock is about 10 and eat the same as other freshwater ducks.

distribution

Winterbird. A habitat nationwide, but in Hokkaido a small number breeds. From China Mainland, Korea Peninsula, Japan winter over. The breeding ground is from eastern Siberia to Primoryezu and Kamchatka Peninsula.
