Places and times seen in Munakata city
Munakata Okinoshima, Munakata Oshima, Ichinoshima, you can see throughout the year. The population density is high in Munakata Okinoshima and Munakata Oshima, and it suddenly jumps off at Mt. Oshima's Otake mountain climbing road suddenly with big feathers and is surprised. It is difficult to observe because there is a lot of caution and it is often in the tree bushes. In the breeding season, it carries out courtship flight that it flutters and flies strongly and glides.
Characteristic
The total length is 40 cm, and the sexes are the same color. The whole body appears black, much bigger than the pheasant. The neck is longer than the body, the head looks small. Head, neck and back, red purple, the neck and chest have green metallic luster. Beaks are pale yellow on the end and pale in red.
Habit
It is limited to islands and inhabits only hardwood broadleaved forests. Eat favorite nuts such as tabnocks. Sometimes you eat grass fruit on the ground.
Breeding habits differ depending on islands. It mainly builds nests on trees, but there are places where breeding occurs on the ground.
In the daytime, I rarely leave the forest.
distribution
It is distributed as island birds on southern islands of Honshu and living in evergreen broad-leaved forests. In many places it is a waterfowl, but it is said that some islands have seasonal movement.
It is inhabited only in Japan (southern Chubu Region, Izu Islands, Nansei Islands, Oki Islands etc. islands) and coasts / islands, Jeju and Ulleungdo in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula.
